Video production feedback

The candidate demonstrates excellence in most technical areas making level 4 the best fit.  My initial concern over the slow pace of the song has been overcome with sensitive content and well paced editing.  A clear concept has been chosen and a firm direction has been chosen for the narrative.  Good time management skills allowed the project to be competed well before the deadline. Titles are created which are influenced by real media texts (Taylor Swift) and add a professional look.  The speed of some clips is altered to achieve the mood and to help the narrative flow which is planned in a clearly storyboarded series of shots.  There is an element of performance that is improved in post-production.  There are a range of shots and lip synching is achieved editing sound with visuals effectively.  Costume and mise-en-scene are employed to indicate mourning and to brand the artist.  Some shots of the artist are particularly effective and creative such as the 360 degree shot.  A clever use of archive footage from the ‘videostar’ app allows level 4 to be achieved as this adds to the narrative and is edited to create meaning.  It provides context to the narrative showing the ‘good times’ before the bereavement. The actress is well directed with make-up, locations and costume adding to the mise-en-scene.  The camera is steady when necessary, with some hand-held shots to evoke point of view and always controlled when moving.   Slow motion at the end adds poignancy and a shot of the order of service bookends the narrative.  The artist is branded and is the focus throughout although the choice of song needs to be explained in the narrative as possibly not conventional for a music video.33/40

Final Digi-pack

Digi-pack

This is our completed album digi-pack. We decided to keep it simple and only have four panels.

Top Left; as the song 'Heaven' is dedicated to the artists friend and is the main song on the album we decided to put a note so the consumers knows that the album is dedicated to the artists friend.

Top Right; for this panel we wanted to keep it quite plain as the other panels have quite a lot of content on it. Therefore we decided to to use a photo of the artist with her signature over the top. This makes the album look more personal to the consumer.

Scaling Our Print Products

Scaling Our Print Products

We want our print products to be as realistic as possible as if we was pitching the idea of an album to someone. We scaled our products to the size of a CD panel, to do this we researched the sizes which were 12cmx12cm. Next, using Microsoft word we used a ruler tool to measure each side. We found that we had to crop some of the sides down as they were not all equal. The reason we used Microsoft was because it is easy and quick to use.

Final Print Product: Advert In A Magazine

Advert In A Magazine

For our advert in a magazine we chose to have a landscape advert which would cover two pages. We liked the idea of this as it is more noticeable when flicking through a magazine.

Process of creating the advert

After looking through previous A-Level media products and existing ones online we began to design our advert. The first thing we did was insert the picture of Jess walking down the path and made it slightly transparent so the picture wasn't so vivid, we thought that this would be an effective photo to use as Jess is in the centre so we could have the writing around the outside of her.

Originally, we used the same font as we have used on our album cover for this (Seravek Extra Light) but we felt that it didn't look like a real media product, due to other adverts for albums having more complex titles. We decided to do some more research and looked at real life adverts for albums in magazines, for example Jessie J's - Who You Are album and Ellie Goulding's - Lights album.

Using 1001fonts.com, we experimented with lots of different fonts before we found one that looked most effective with our advert. Before inserting this however, we decided that the background didn't look bright enough so we inserted some lens flares on Premier Pro, which by inserting the lense flare in the top left corner, this has made the photo look as if the sun is shining down on Jess which links to the album cover and the style of it. We then inserted the font and played around with until we was happy with how it looked.

After looking at real album adverts, we decided to include a star rating, a small quote from a newspaper, and information about a certain song on the album. We also wrote 'Includes Number One Hit On iTunes "Heaven"' as this is song in our music video and wanted that to be also advertised. For this we used the same font as the album cover as the information is only small, and having the new font we used for the titles on the advert would not have looked right.

Another feature of an advert of an album is a small picture of the album cover itself, along with the price, barcode and where it is available on it, which was used on the You Me at Six album. We decided to use the "Available on iTunes" logo because in modern society that is where most people buy their music, and no longer go into a music store to buy it. We put this price at £9.99 as that is the typical price for an album on iTunes as well as in shops if you were to buy the physical product.

After much discussion we felt like our advert didn't fulfill the brief as much as we wanted it to. Therefore we decided to change our advert to portrait. The reasoning behind this was that if we were to use a landscape advert the middle part would be lost in the seem of the magazine and could potentially lose the effectiveness. However, we didn't want to completely redesign so we just recycled our original advert by opening a new document and copying each section over. This advert will only be covering one page of a magazine however it will contain the same information as before but wont look as empty as the previous advert did as it was much larger.

Again, we played around with the design and tailored it to our liking. Instead of having the background in the centre we found that it worked well being placed to the right and having all the writing on the left, including our album cover.

Task 12: Audience Feedback of 5 print products

Audience Feedback

As we are biased to our CD cover we decided to play with the colours and arrangement of the cover in order to find out what people liked best. Therefore we added a cover which had colour, a sepia effect as well as getting rid of the black and white effect (which we liked). We printed all 5 images off and asked people to pick which one they liked best and why. We didn't explain what genre or style of music the CD was as we wanted our results to be based on the look of the CD case alone. Here are our results...

  • We found that the most popular design was in fact the one in colour (the middle one) the reason which was said for why they liked it the best was purely because it is in colour. Many said that if they were in a shop going to buy a CD they would be more drawn into one that was colourful.
  • A very small minority of people chose the black and white covers (top right and bottom left).
  • Several people asked what type of genre the music was however we didn't tell them until after they picked a cover. Many people said they would of picked the black and white cover if they knew the style of music was emotional and slow.

Final Print Product: Album Digipack

Progress of Final Print Product

From our previous audience feedback we discovered that our audience was drawn in by the colourful CD cover. In order to improve our product we decided to scrap the black and white effect and make it more colourful.

Firstly we removed the grayscale effect. Next on photoshop we carefully removed the green background which left us with the single image of Jess looking up towards the sky with her hands in her pockets. Although we wanted her to be more colourful we didn't want to use that background. After looking at Taylor Swifts albums for inspiration we decided to use a orange toned scene to be the background for the cover. We then overlay the photo of Jess over the top to make it look like she was already standing there.

We wanted to put a lense flare on the photo to capture it looking like she was standing outside when the sun was setting as this is not as harsh as the previous background. We wasn't sure how to add a lense flare to our photo however we used our initiative and use Premier Pro to import the photo and add a lense flare. We then screen-shotted this and imported it back onto the front of the CD cover. We then repeated this for the back cover so the front and the back covers would link together.

We then wanted to know whether our audience still preferred the previous cover they picked (the bottom one out of the two) in the last audience feedback. Therefore we asked a handful of people to pick between the two above covers to see if they would like our new cover which they did.

We were really glad that the majority of people liked our new cover however there was still a slight problem that a couple of people mentioned. This was that they didn't like the lense flare ring that surrounded Jess's torso. We agreed then that we needed to make it more natural as the lense flare was too bright for the photo therefore we went back onto Premier Pro and softened the flare.

Once we did that we imported the photo once again in order to complete our final cover.

Task 11: First Draft Of Print Products

First Draft Of Print Products

After we finished editing, we began on our print products. We started by looking through photos/videos we had of Jess (the artist) from when we filmed which we discovered a photo of her walking down a path with the back to the camera. We liked this shot and thought it would be good on the album as it is helps brand her as an artist, as she is wearing the hat, coat and heels which is her signature style.

We began by going on photo shop and cropping out the background of the shot of her walking away because we didn't want the cover to reflect the music video only, as it is in album cover and not a single cover. As we was focusing on the front cover first we inserted the picture in order to add titles. We then picked out a font that was quite simple however to allow it to stand out we added a shadow to give it more depth and allow it to pop out of the page instead of having it flat to the image.

We chose to have the background grey because the songs on the album are more slower and emotional songs rather than up tempo songs, so we thought a darker shade would look most effective. The photo of Jess on its own in colour did not suit the style of the rest of the cover as it didn't go with the grey tones. Initially we didn't know where we was going to place to cropped picture of Jess however after playing around with some effects we managed to find a structure which we liked. We duplicated the picture so there was three of them in total then placed them next to each other in a horizontal line across the front CD cover. We then tried to put the photos in black and white, but it looked too plain and clashed with the background. We then adjusted the transparency in all three images of Jess and made them slowly fade, like a ombre effect, across the page to made it look like shes slowly fading away.

We then started on the back cover. We found a medium close up shot of Jess we took while filming which we really liked because it also helped brand the artist. This shot is similar to the one we drew in our hand-drawn draft of our CD cover however we decided to put this photo in black and white effect to blend it with the front cover. We used the same text font as we did for the front cover, although this does not stand out as much as the writing is a lot smaller although we did put a thin shadow around it.

Also on the back we used a barcode and our production company name as that is what is included on a real album back cover, along with small print at the bottom about copyright issues etc. We decided to have our song list going horizontally to stick with the theme of horizontal lines.

We then decided we were going to create more drafts of the covers and then get audience feedback on them. We started by creating another cover that swapped around the front and back from our previous design. When this was finished we actually preferred this designed, as in the previous design the front cover looked quite bare and plain where as with the picture of Jess on the front it stands out more. Also on the back cover due to the song list, there isn't much of a background needed so the 3 outlines fitted well here and on the previous cover the words got lost into the picture of Jess due to the variety of tones on her outfit and the trees where as in the new one they stand out. Therefore we decided the cover below was our favorite out of the two.

Task 11: Creating Print Artefacts

Hand Drawn Drafts Of Print Products

This is our first draft of our print product which will be a CD digipak. We wanted to keep it simple and not have too much going on on the cover. We decided to incorporate the artist and her name on the cover to sell and brand the artist as much as possible. We named the CD 'one night only' as we thought it would fit the type of CD well, as well as it being memorable like a slogan. As it is a album cover and not a single cover for the music video we are producing we didn't want it to reflect our music video as we wanted it to be more universal to the whole album although we did want to pull through elements such as the black hat into the cover as we thought it would help brand the artist as it gives her a trademark style which is more memorable.

For our second print product we designed a plain, yet effective front cover. The reason we used a blue ombre effect around the edges of the cover was because we referenced a singers spotlight and wanted to use that as inspiration for our cover. We thought this might look effective if we just had the writing in the middle however it doesn't help brand the artist in anyway therefore we decided not to use this one.

Our final design was a close up shot of Jess in her signature hat. We wanted this cover to be quite soft and gentle which was inspired by Leona Lewis's album 'Spirit'. However the only problem with this cover is that we did not know where to incorporate the text or what colour to have the text as we didn't want it to cover her face. But if we had it covering her hat, having a white text would blend in with the background in either corner but black wouldn't be possible either due to the colour of the hat. For this design we would need to try a variety of colours to see which worked best.

Final Cut Of Music Video

Final Cut Of Our Music Video

Narrative: Two friends, called Jessica & Katy. Katy has passed away and Jess is attending her funeral.

We began with an opening shot of the church which slowly panned upwards towards the sky. Immediately you recognise that it's a church from the cross symbol that appears at the top of the building. In this shot you can hear wind and rain which works well with the shot as you can see a grey sky above the church, this is when the music begins. It is slow and calming.

The next shot is Jess sitting in the back of a funeral car staring out the window, emotionless. The title 'Jessica Hall' appears on the screen in bold white letters. We decided to use this colour and font after watching Taylor Swifts music video 'Wildest Dreams' where the font is similar. This follows onto a time-lapse of the sky where in the same font the words 'Heaven' appear, we used the time-lapse effect on the iPhone in order to create this clip. We did this by holding the phone up towards the sky whilst being in a moving car with the window down. We decided to put this title over this particular shot because we felt like many people refer to 'heaven' as in the sky. The singing begins in this shot too. We picked plain titles as we didn't want anything complicated or too extravagant as we wanted to keep it simple.

Next we see the back of Jess, walking through a gate into a church. She is wearing a black hat and a grey jacket with black heels, we dressed her in a black hat as this is her signature style. This shot quickly changes to a medium shot of Jess sitting in a dark studio which is our performance element, this will be seen throughout the music video. We decided to have to room dark as we felt as she was singing this would reflect the dark time she was going through in her life and would enhance the feelings she was portraying whilst singing. Throughout the video we kept her clothing dark and simple as we didn't want many bright colours that would stand out as this didn't work with our theme. We decided to also have this quite plain and simple as there are many shots that are full of nature and colour therefore to contrast this we wanted a dark background.

30 seconds into the music video we see a black and white clip of two girls, one brunette and one blonde. They are having a pillow fight and laughing and giggling together. The black and white clips are flash backs of their friendship and the good times that they shared. Many of the shots have been slightly slowed down to go with the pace and beat of the song as when we used them at normal speed they didn't fit with the song. We didn't reveal immediately who the blonde girl was as we didn't want the narrative to be given straight away as we wanted the audience to think about it first.

At around 50 seconds into the music video we see the first shot of Jess actually in the church graveyard. She is sitting on a bench looking down at a piece of paper in her hands. However it is hard to work out what is written on it at the moment. About 20 seconds later we see a close up shot of the piece of paper which is revealed to be a funeral programme for her friend, Katy. This makes it more clear who the girl is in the black and white shots.

After this we wanted to slightly lift the mood of the music video so we had a point of view shot of Jess from Katy's point of a adventure they'd taken through a forest. These are my favourite shots in the music video as they are very natural and life-like which we felt worked really well contrasting the good and the bad times. Jess is walking in front of Katy, she is laughing and being silly. I love the shot of Katy holding her hand out and Jess running back to get her as we felt it was very symbolic of there friendship and that Jess would never leave Katy behind which is quite sad as it could be argued that Katy left Jess. These shots are sandwiched between more black and white flashbacks to emphasise their friendship even more. I think this allows the audience to empathise as they are just two ordinary girls just having fun and could represent that this could happen to anybody therefore we must cherish the time we have with our friends.

We also have many shots of Jess in a country lane which is very scenic and pretty. This works well as it's just Jess and an open background which allows Jess to almost communicate with the camera as the shots are medium in order to see her facial expressions. Many of these shots show Jess distressed about losing her friend which contrasts with the flashbacks.

We tried to match clips to the appropriate lyrics in order to portray a realistic narrative. At the end of the song at around 2.55 the lyrics say 'so go on, go home'. We placed a clip of Jess leaving the church and closing the gate to represent her going home, however not forgetting about her friend as she is still holding the funeral programme. To finish the music video we decided to play one more black and white flash back of the two girls together in order to remind the audience of the narrative one last time. This shot is a still close up and shows the two girls play fighting. Katy gives Jess a kiss on the cheek and they are both smiling. Finally we see Jesses legs walking off slowly down the road, as the final lyrics of the song plays we see Jess drop the funeral programme on the floor.  The camera then pans into the final shot of the programme which focuses on the words written 'heaven couldn't wait for you' which is also lyrics in the song. Originally we didn't have this clip however we felt like this ended the music video well and bookended it.

November feedback

Your web-log evidences great progress and a clear understanding of the task.  The edits show a desire to improve and your creative journey is demonstrated in a series of posts.

The current edit shows sensitivity to the edt and intuitive editing technique.  The narrative is clear to me and there are a range of shots including point of view shots and some nice technical effects such as a lens flare.

Targets

  • Show the video to a target audience and gain feedback.  Prepare questions to gain some qualitative research

  • Bookend the video with something to clarify the story such as the ordr of service

  • Can you make the order of service clearer. Maybe include a close up and drop it in avoiding any continuity issues.

  • Have you any more footage from the studio that you can include? For example some close ups of the artist and use of lighting may improve the range of shots.

  • Ad a logo for the channel and a title for the song.

  • Tighten the edit by shortening some clips.

  • Ensure lip-synching is accurate.

The video is reaching level 4 and shows great promise.

Music Video Feedback

Music Video Feedback

After completing our first full edit of our music video we decided that we needed some feedback from a range of people. As we decided the target audience was fairly universal we asked several people of different ages to complete a simple questionnaire after watching the music video.

We didn't want to give anything away about the music video as we didn't want the response to be biased or inaccurate so we showed the music video first and explained the story line once they completed the questionnaire.

These are the responses we received:

m

From our results we found that everyone who watched our music video knew what the narrative was straight away and thought it was clear what was happening and who the character were as they all identified that it was about two friends and that one of them had passed away and they all knew that the black and white clips represented their friendship as it acted like a flashback.

Task 10: First Edit of Music Video

Filming Diary 8/10/15

Filming Diary 8/10/15

In preparation for our filming we booked out our sixth form theatre to film some clips for our music video. All we did to to this was checked that it was free then booked it in with the receptionist. On the day we used the hall from 11.30am until 12.30pm in which we had prepared all the shots we needed to film so we could start filming straight away. Once we arrived in the theatre we spread the black curtains across all the walls that we were filming to give us the blank canvas that we wanted and had all the tiered seating pushed back.

We originally planned to use several mirrors to surround the artist whom would be sitting on a black stool in the middle, however when filming we found that it didn't look as effective as we thought it would and therefore changed the shot so it was just the artist sitting in a room without any extra mis-e-scene as we thought this would be more raw and powerful.

The equipment we was going to use was a camera, tripod and dolly however on set when taking on set photos we found that the quality on our phones recorded in a better quality than the cameras as the footage looked pixalated and blurry. To ensure our phone cameras would work we filmed some preliminary shots and found that it worked well therefore we recorded the rest of our footage on our phones.

After filming in the theatre we drove down to our second location at the church which we spent less time than anticipated at as we had pre-planned all the shots we wanted so they didn't take too long to film. Unexpectedly we couldn't film inside the church so we had to adapt some of the shots however we overcame the problem and we now prefer the alternate shots we have.

After filming in the church we walked up to the forest where our third location was and on the way we stopped at the country road which we thought would fit our music video well so we filmed some improvised clips which ended up looking effective and we decided to include it in our music video. This didn't take up too much time as we had time to spare as we were in-front of our schedule so we could afford to film some extra footage.

Finally we arrived at our third location of the forest which we were going to film the artist singing however once arriving we found that it would look more effective making the artist look like she's in a day dream with her friend who passed away. Although we didn't plan this shot we found that recording it in the moment worked really well and when playing it back it was one of our favorite shots as it looked so natural. The only problem we encountered was trying not to get any private property or members of the public in our shots however the majority of our shots were filmed in secluded areas which were quiet also we filmed in the middle of the day in the week so there wasn't many people around.

We ensure we checked the weather several days in advanced to make sure that we didn't get caught up in the rain and ruin any equipment.

Task 10: Risk Assessment

Task 10: Permissions

Permissions

In order to use the Beyonce's song "Heaven" we had to get in contact with her record company and ask for permission. We firstly planned to send them a letter because we could not find the correct email address, but we kept looking and eventually found it. The picture below is a copy of the letter that we wrote, which we copied and pasted into an email.

Also we had to ask permission from the Church Wardens and the Vicar of the church to film in the church grounds. We found the email address of the church on the church website and sent an email through the website.

Task 10: Recce

Recce

Media companies use recces to look at locations where they want to film. The team of producers work together to decide whether the location is suitable for what they are hoping to film. Checks will be done to make sure that the area is safe for all the actors and filming crew and to locate any possible problems that may arise in the process of filming.

Our first photo was taken in a car. This is a simple location as all we need to film is the artist staring out of the window. These shots will only be used sporadically throughout the music video as this is not a main location.
We wanted to have a shot in a car to make it look like the artist is dreaming out the window as well as have a variety of shots so that the audience does not get bored watching the video. One problem that could occur is unsteady shots however we

could stabilize it slightly when editing

Our main location is at a traditional church. We wanted to look at this location before filming as it could be a very problematic location for filming for several reasons. Firstly we will have to get permission to use and film the building and inside. To do this we will use the churches website to contact the vicar and proceed from there. Also as it's a public space we cannot predict whether members of the public will be there so we have to be sensitive towards them and avoid filming whilst they are around. This could mean that filming could be inconsistent and we will have to plan to spend a longer time here to ensure we can film everything needed without disturbing anyone else.

Next to the church is a long country lane with few houses but very scenic. We decided to add this to our list of locations as we thought we could do some improvised shots and hopefully add some more locations to our music video to ensure we have many different layers to it. As its a isolated area we do not have to worry about filming members of the public or peoples property as its covered in greenery.

Our last location is forest-like. This recce photo is at the entrance which is covered in bent tree stalks which made it a nice location to film in as it had a bit of character to it which we thought would work well in our music video. We will have to check the weather forecast before filming in this location as we don't want to wreck the equipment.

Narrative for our music video

Narrative

In the original narrative for the music video it was based on Beyonce having a miscarriage and losing her child. Therefore we decided to interpret it into our own narrative of losing a close/best friend. We thought we would be able to represent this better as our artist in our music video is considerably younger than Beyonce in hers and therefore wouldn't be as obvious to the audience if we was to make her lose a child. The artist in the music video will be the mourner as her best friend has passed away. As the actor who will be playing the artist is a good friend of mine we found some footage of when we were younger which we wanted to incorporate because it shows happiness within their friendship which suited the style of the music video. These clips will represent flashbacks and past events of their friendship which makes the music video seem more realistic as there is real footage within. We want our music video to show a story which viewers can relate to.

Pitch feedback

A well executed pitch showing some planning and development of ideas. There are still some gaps which hopefully the pitch will help to clarify.  You are working at lower end of level 3 at present.

remember to address the audience and avoid turning your back and looking at the screen.  The original video was shown which helped the audience connect with your ideas.  Your slides allowed you to explain ideas and raise issues. Use these as prompts rather than redaing them verbatim.
the storyboard of six scenes is fine for this stage in the process but needs to be expanded when planning becomes clearer.  It is an essential part of the process and must be documented.

I like the ideas of a performance around nature, maybe this would be the idea for branding the artist.
You consider issues surrounding representation and keep reflecting upon this.
The Beyonce video is quite experimanetal and abstract, what will you take from the original video?

  • Engage with the evaluation questions. this will help later when you answer them.
  • How will you brand the artist
  • Outline your drafts and ideas for print artefacts
  • Put the presentation on the blog
  • Develop ideas for a narrative

The song is quite slow so how will this affect the style and pace of editing?
What lighting have you considered?
How will you put a 'positive perspective' that you discussed on the song?
What permission will you need for shooting on location?

Task 8: Music Video Pitch

Pitch Feedback Questions

1.The Beyonce video is quite experimental and abstract, what will you take from the original video?

We are taking the same narrative as the Beyonce video of losing a loved one, however the artist in our video has lost her best friend whereas in the Beyoce video it is about her losing her child through a miscarriage. Also we have similar locations to Beyonce such as the church and the car but are also going to incorporate our own location ideas such as the forest and our sixth form theatre. We also are going to be including old video clips that we found of Jess (the artist) and Katy (the friend that has passed away) throughout the video which represents the artist having flashbacks and reminiscing the past.

2. How will you brand the artist?

Our artist is going to be a cover artist, where she doesn't actually sing her own songs, but covers songs by other artists. The sort of songs which will feature on her album are more soul, slower and emotional songs, rather than upbeat dance songs. An example of a song that could feature on the album is Leona Lewis - Run. Our artist will have a trademark style that will feature in the video and on the album digipak. This includes the black floppy hat, natural makeup, neutral coloured clothing etc.

3. The song is quite slow so how will this affect the style and pace of editing?

Due to the song being slow we will probably be using a lot of slow motion throughout the video on certain clips. This is because some of the shots we get might be a bit fast and they will not coincide with the music, so making them a bit slower will make the flow of the clips and the whole video more suitable. Furthermore using quick cuts may not correspond with the song, so dissolves or fades may be more appropriate, but once we have recorded and start editing we can play around with it and see what looks best.

4. What lighting have you considered?

In terms of lighting we are going to be using a variety, depending on the particular scene. When we are recording in the theatre/hall the artist is going to be sat in the middle of the room on a stool with no other surroundings apart from a black curtain around the whole room. Here we will have low key lighting and also a spotlight on the artist to emphasis isolation. In the shots we film outside we want to use the natural lighting only as it will look more realistic. We will also be doing this for the church scene.

5. How will you put a 'positive perspective' that you discussed on the song?

In Beyonce's video she includes videos of her and a friend driving to the beach and taking videos, which we liked the idea of because like in the Heaven video, we don't want every shot to be sad. However we are going to change the happy times the artist is experiencing, for example we thought about filming the artist going to a party. Also we are including the old videos we found of Jess and Katy when they were younger of them because it shows the happiness of their friendship and the artist having flashbacks of these good times.

6. What permission will you need for shooting on location?

We will need permission to shoot in the church and the theatre. For the church we will need to get in contact with the vicar for permission to film inside and in the outside grounds of the church. Also for the theatre we need to ask permission from reception to use it as teachers may have booked it out already to teach lessons.
